ALTAEROS ANNOUNCES DEMONSTRATION IN DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE AND INDIANA NATIONAL GUARD-SPONSORED EXERCISE, T-REX 24-2
Altaeros ST-Flex deployed a critical radar and secure communications payload to support the exercise.
Camp Atterbury, Indiana, USA., September 26, 2024 — Autonomous Aerostat Innovator, Altaeros, announced their successful demonstration in the Technology Readiness Experimentation T-REX 24-2 exercise, sponsored by the Department of Defense (DOD), Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E)), and Indiana National Guard. Altaeros provided an ST-Flex aerostat and demonstrated autonomous features and benefits such as launch, recovery, active flight controls and high mission availability while showcasing a multifunctional payload including IMSAR’s NSP-7 Aerostat Radar, Silvus Technologies’ Streamcaster SC4400E 4×4 MIMO radio, and Trillium’s HD80 EO/IR sensor. The event took place August 19 – 28 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana (CAIN).

T-REX 24-2 is a full-scale exercise that allows Industry partners to demonstrate selected technologies in an operationally relevant environment. The exercise is intended to build a body of evidence to enable senior leaders to transition warfighting capabilities. ST-Flex achieved 98% uptime operating 24/7 through the duration of the exercise. The payload onboard ST-Flex was flown at a height of 1000ft above ground level to support many other demonstrations during the event. ST-Flex hosted a critical aerial node that provided a critical capability to bridge communications across the Army and all industry partners – delivering a powerful, scalable, and EW resilient Silvus Technologies MANET mesh network for use during the event. This multifunctional payload also provided radar and visual cuing allowing multi-domain data sharing across the entire exercise. Altaeros’ unique payload bay allows multiple technologies to be integrated on a single platform at a great height for extended periods of time, when historically these capabilities may have needed multiple and/or separate pieces of infrastructure to be deployed in the same scenario.
“T-REX 24-2 was an impactful exercise that showcased cutting-edge innovation in the defense space. We are honored to have demonstrated ST-Flex alongside a multitude of innovative technologies,” said Altaeros President, Jeff Lloyd-Jones, “Our team and our government sponsors have come away from this event inspired by the impact these technologies will have on the modern battlefield coupled with our ST-Flex persistent aerial platform.”
Altaeros’ patented autonomous control system, Aerostat Autopilot™, eliminates the need for a traditional ground crew to perform all day-to-day aerostat operations including launching, landing, and ongoing flight operation. Eliminating the ground crew extends mission availability in challenging wind conditions, while simplifying logistics and operations. Each ST-Flex is rapidly deployable and can carry up to 132 lbs of mission-critical payload in support of crucial defense missions.
